Billie Southwick Bourgeois, Painter
Phone:  225 766-4262
Web site:  www.billiebourgeois.com - Email:  sjbour@gmail.com

Meet Billie Bourgeois:  I am a "war baby." That is, I was born during WWII, the oldest of six children.  I grew up in the stifling humidity of the Deep South, while being nourished by bold Louisiana cuisine.  My life is loaded with a vast array of experiences, including seven years as a nun in a religious order.  That rich experience planted a sense of the sacred and numinous within me, and provided a fertile ground for an already natural instinct for art. So after leaving the convent life, I continued my study even into marriage and early motherhood, when 20 years ago I completed my MFA in painting and drawing. During my studies, I fell in love with the work of Marc Chagall and felt a close connection to his whimsical, yet poignant approach to imagery.  Even now, my goal as a painter is response, not representation.  I want my mark-making to reveal my inner impulse, my excitement about life.  I have an easy outgoing personality and I love my colors bold, and my subjects drawn with large, generous form.
Most of my work is done in series.  I always begin a body of work with an idea, a concept. Never content to make just one piece of work, I usually play with drawings in my sketchbook to cultivate a single insight into a variety of compositional arrangements.  The paintings evolve from those initial drawings into imagery made in a variety of mediums, always striving to maintain the freshness of those sketchbook thumbnails.

Jerilyn has always felt an appreciation for art.  As a child, this was not only exhibited in the clothing she designed and made but also in all aspects of her life.  As a young wife and mother living in West Africa, Jerilyn experienced many different cultures which nourished her interest in all art forms.  Upon returning to Sunset, her hometown, Jerilyn's passion did not wane but took a detour--nursing school.  Upon graduating from LSU-E, she worked as a registered nurse at several local hospitals and at a local nursing home.  She is now retired from nursing which allows her the time for her passion--her art studio.

Jerilyn has painted, woven baskets and designed mosaic masks and portraits.  Any object is likely to be seen by her with an eye for composition and artistic potential.  Jerilyn's open-mindedness and eagerness to experience many art forms eventually led her to fusing glass.  Her glass works are truly a labor of love.  Her designs are both utilitarian and flow with richness and energy.

Her work can bee seen at San Souci Fine Crafts Gallery in Lafayette, Festival International de Louisiane, Celebration of Herbs and Gardens the first Saturday each May in Sunset, Festival Acadiens Louisiana Crafts Fair in Lafayette and at her studio.  Visit her web site linked above.

George Marks had devoted the last two years of his life to developing a living, working, teaching artist community in Arnaudville.  He has been wildly successful!  It began with Town Market Gallery where artists are able to exhibit their work in a co-op.  Next, George established Nunu's Nightlite and Cafe which is in honor of his deceased father and managed by his mother, Rita.  George Marks is the founder of Frederick l'Ecole des Arts, a non-profit corporation, where artists are givien the opportunity to teach and earn supplemental income and students are exposed to the world of art.
George is one of the originator of Fire and Water -- Le Feu et l'Eau, the winter festival of bonfires held annually.  In 2007, George Marks and a group of his supporters also originated the Bayou Blues Revival.

George Marks has created a movement in Arnaudville that has been reported in many of the local, regional and national publications.  One Arnaudville Elementary student wrote an essay about George Marks entitled "The  Good Citizen."  The impact of George Marks creative genius and limitless energy is far reaching.

In addition, George Marks is a very successful painter.  Influenced by his everyday surroundings, George attempts to create environments that propel the viewer into a realm where the diffusion of color, marriage of subject matter and alternative media convene.  What sets his work apart from many other modern painters are his roots to the landscape and the culture of south Louisiana.  Educated at LSU in Baton Rouge, George Marks is credited with the current artistic and economic development in the Arnaudville area.

In college I studied Conceptual Design; a very broad major that allowed me to explore everything from animation to graphic design to oil painting to installation pieces, and beyond. I have kept the spirit of conceptual design in my life and continue to find inspiration in many places. One of the mediums I feel in love with has been pottery. I found that I can use ceramics to express my love of the absurd, the amusing, and just the plain fun of things.

I originally started out doing sculptural raku pieces, incorporating humor and surrealism, even abstractism as an influence to my work, each piece is hand thrown then hand built. I choose to use Raku glazes with my sculptures since the whole of the process is unpredictable and I felt those pieces needed that random element. One can use the same glaze on the same shape piece and never get an identical pattern or result. I like that the fire and smoke have the last say on what my creations will ultimately look like.

I then went on to work on functional pottery, bowls, spoon holders, bells and vases.

This is when I started having an interest in crystalline glazes. You can get some beautiful results. Although they aren't as "random" as raku, I still find that each piece creates it's own character, plus I love the colors and random patterns the glazes take on. I've worked mostly in vases because this glazes are toxic, but have also explored some ways to use the crystalline glazes safely in bowls as well.

Which brings me to my most recent undertaking... Underglazing! I've decided to give my bowls character by actually giving them a character of their own. I've followed my interests in some of my favorite subjects, pirates, squid, deep sea creatures, monkey's with a fez on and other characters that tickle my fancy. I have a great time doing them and hope that others enjoy them as much as I do making them."

Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, I've been creating art since I could hold a pencil. I was lucky enough to have parents who recognized my interests and enrolled me in art classes at a young age. Since then I've been creating, painting, drawing, etc. I discovered ceramics later in life and have developed a profound working relationship with clay and see it as a medium to transform my ideas into reality.
Available for commissioned work.

Hello, my name is Patrick Ober.  I have been making Chainmail armour and jewelry for 16 years, a bit more than half my life.  I began making armour from fencing and electrical wire that I found around the house and barn.  From those first steps I have learned many of the different weaves and patterns of European, Japanese, and Persian mail and much of the history and historical usage of the different armour types.  I am constantly fascinated in the mutability of chains from their original design types and chainmail families, with only a small nudge and they become something completely different.  With fusing and soldering, chains can be stretched and their need for intrinsic strength (thick wire) can be overcome to create non-traditional designs that build on, but differ from their parent chains.

For the last five years I have worked in the Baltimore and just recently moved to southern Pennsylvania.  I teach at Made in Metal Jewelers Tools and Supplies in Hampden and the Beadazzled on North Charles Street.

The MICA Jewelry center encouraged me to refine my knitting of mail and introduced me to small scale soldering.  This has allowed me to make delicate items that are very solid and hold up to a fair amount of abuse.  These techniques have also had an impact on what types of chain I make on a regular basis although I am always willing to try new things, incorporating different materials and esthetics.

Kristin Pavelka was born and raised in LaGrange Park, IL. When she was in high school, she choreographed for and performed in the Eurythmic Dance Company at her high school and also the Youth Dance Company and Senior Company at Columbia College Chicago. In addition, she assisted Dardi McGinley-Gallivan in teaching the Youth Dance Company. Through these companies, Kristin had the opportunity to work closely with amazing choreographers, such as Melissa Thodos, Randy Duncan, Keith Elliot, Shirley Mordine, and Dardi McGinley-Gallivan to name a few.

In December of 2003, Kristin received her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Dance from Purdue University. While at Purdue, she choreographed and performed with the Purdue Repertory Dance Company for 4 years. During that time, Kristin held the offices of treasurer for one year and president of the company for 2 years. Some other creative projects she was involved with were directing Black Box, an informal student-directed dance concert, and collaborating with Professor Carol Cunningham and the Purdue technology department on a Real Time Motion Capture Project. Kristin wore the motion capture “suit” while performing a solo in which she was the first dancer ever to completely trigger all aspects of the dance by herself, making it truly in real time. Kristin also attended the American College Dance Festival three times during her college career. In 2002, she had the opportunity to perform Windblown in the Gala Concert at the festival, and that piece was chosen as an alternate for nationals. Then, in 2003, Kristin’s piece "Chameleon" was chosen to be taken to the festival for adjudication.

Kristin is currently pursuing her MFA in Dance at University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Her upcoming projects include a graduate composition showing of choreography and performance in December 2004, and performing in Robin Wilson’s piece in Jazzin! at the Power Center in February 2005.

Susan Sibille, Graphic Design
P O Box 311 -- Grand Coteau, LA  70541
Email:  sumak@centurytel.net

Susan Sibille earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Southwestern Louisiana.

Her photos appear at Casa Azul in Grand Coteau, OGH Imaging in Sunset, the Town Market in Arnaudville, and at Coffee Break in Breaux Bridge.
Sibille was born in Opelousas, raised in Lawtel and now lives in Grand Coteau.  She photographs landscape and architecture. Many of her photos feature nature that would otherwise might go unnoticed. She has a special interest in capturing light, especially of dusk and dawn and enjoys the meditativeness of shooting pictures. She usually shoots in color, appreciating the warmth of light, blue sky and colors.

Sibille often takes photos of historic buildings as a way to preserve them in image, before they are gone. Standing back, at a distance from her subject, she is able to integrate architecture and nature in a way that shows the visual and historical perspectives.

Susan Sibille sees and reveals the uniqueness of structures like the old church of Grand Coteau among the oaks. To shoot the old buildings in their environments lends to the spirit of the place and the moment.
